Can you tax a car without an MOT?

No. The DVLA computer system checks the national MOT database automatically whenever you apply to tax a vehicle or set up a Direct Debit. If your MOT has expired, the DVLA will block your tax renewal until a valid test certificate is recorded.

What is the penalty for driving an untaxed car in the UK?

Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras operated by police forces and the DVLA actively scan registration marks. Driving an untaxed vehicle can result in an instant £80 fine (reduced to £40 if paid in 28 days), plus back payment of tax owed. If prosecuted in court, maximum penalties can reach £1,000 or 5 times the annual tax due. Untaxed vehicles left on public roads are also subject to wheel-clamping and impoundment.

What happens to car tax when you buy a used car?

Under UK law since October 2014, vehicle road tax does not transfer with the vehicle. The previous owner automatically receives a refund for any complete unused months from the DVLA, and you must tax the vehicle immediately in your name before driving it away, even if the windscreen display or previous owner claims it is taxed.
