Everything You Need to Know About the UK MOT Test

When does a vehicle need an MOT test?

In Great Britain, every car and motorcycle must undergo an MOT test once it reaches 3 years of age from the date of first registration (or 1 year for ambulances, taxis, and commercial vehicles). After the first test, an MOT certificate is valid for exactly 12 months, requiring annual renewal.

What is the penalty for driving without a valid MOT?

Driving a vehicle on UK public roads without a valid MOT certificate carries a fine of up to £1,000. Furthermore, driving an unroadworthy vehicle with a "Dangerous" defect can lead to a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban, and 3 penalty points. Most crucially, driving without an MOT automatically invalidates your car insurance policy.

What does the MOT test check?

The test ensures your vehicle meets minimum road safety and environmental standards. Key components inspected include:

  • • Brakes, pads, discs and pedal travel
  • • Steering, suspension linkages and shock absorbers
  • • Tyres (minimum 1.6mm legal tread) & wheels
  • • All exterior lights, headlamp aim & indicators
  • • Exhaust emissions & catalytic converter / DPF
  • • Windscreen, wipers, washers & horn
